In 2021, a YouGov survey revealed that 66% of Americans aspire to become wealthy, with this desire growing rapidly over the years. Millennials and Gen Z are leading the charge. Globally, a 2019 Ipsos survey across 28 countries found that 71% of people, particularly in emerging markets like China, India, Brazil, and Vietnam, share this ambition.
Cryptocurrency is a hot topic among these younger generations. A 2021 Statista survey reported that around 10% of internet users worldwide owned some form of cryptocurrency, with the highest adoption rates in Nigeria (32%), Vietnam (21%), and the Philippines (20%). Millennials and Gen Z are at the forefront of this trend.
I fall squarely into these categories. My passion for cryptocurrency is evident—just check out the live crypto price ticker dominantly placed in the footer of my website. About money, I love every aspect of it—earning it, holding it, investing it, and watching it grow. Not a single day goes by that I don’t read, listen, and research new investment opportunities. It’s more than a hobby or pastime; it’s a bit of an obsession.
Despite being a mentally stable, financially sound, and patient investor who thoroughly researches before diving in, I still made several costly mistakes. These errors amounted to nearly $1 million in losses (about 18.1 BTC, given Bitcoin’s price of $55,185 on July 5, 2024).
Here’s an overview of my investments and losses. Click on each type of investment to read my full story from start to finish:
